Do I need to win a draw to hunt in British Columbia, or can I just buy a licence and go?

Short answer: Usually you can just buy your licences and go. British Columbia runs two systems side by side: General Open Season (GOS), where any licensed hunter can pursue an open species with no draw, and Limited Entry Hunting (LEH), a random draw that caps hunter numbers for certain hunts. Most hunting in BC happens under GOS, so the draw only matters if you want one of the capped hunts.

How does General Open Season work in BC?

Under GOS, a hunter with a valid hunting licence and the right species licence can hunt that species anywhere and anytime its open season runs in a given management unit. Nobody draws your name and nobody limits how many hunters show up. Season dates, bag limits and legal-animal definitions all sit in the Hunting and Trapping Regulations Synopsis.

A lot of hunters coming from draw-heavy provinces assume BC works the same way, then miss seasons they could have walked straight into. If you want a plain-English walkthrough of both systems, the British Columbia Hunting Regulations guide from Victory Ridge Sports lays GOS and LEH out side by side.

When do you actually need a draw?

LEH exists for species and zones where an unlimited season would cause over-harvest. The province sets a fixed number of authorizations for each hunt and picks applicants at random. LEH hunts can cover bison, black bear, caribou, elk, moose, mountain goat, mountain sheep, deer and turkey, depending on the management unit and the year.

A failed draw rarely means a lost fall. Many of the same species that are LEH in one management unit carry a general open season in another, so plenty of hunters plan their year around GOS and treat an LEH win as a bonus.

What do you need before you head out?

Before you can buy a BC hunting licence or apply for anything, you need the basics in place:

  • A Fish and Wildlife ID (FWID) tied to your profile in the WILD licensing system

  • CORE Hunter Education, or the CORE written exam if you already hold a Canadian Firearms Safety Course report

  • A BC hunting licence plus the species licence for what you plan to hunt

  • The current Hunting and Trapping Regulations Synopsis, which took effect July 1, 2026 and runs through June 30, 2028

BC reviews its rules on a two-year cycle, so anything you remember from the 2024-2026 edition may be out of date. Dates, legal animals and access rules moved in places.

What if you are not a BC resident?

Non-residents hunt through GOS only and cannot enter the LEH draw. BC also generally requires non-residents hunting big game to use a licensed guide outfitter, which is a bigger planning step than many visiting hunters expect.

Hunters who travel between provinces also notice how differently seasons get built. New Brunswick, for example, organizes everything by wildlife management zone and weapon type, which you can see in this rundown of the New Brunswick Deer Season 2026.

What mistakes do new BC hunters make most often?

A few errors show up again and again, and almost all of them are avoidable with an evening of reading:

  • Assuming every hunt needs a draw, and skipping seasons that were open to anyone with licences

  • Leaving the FWID and CORE Hunter Education steps until the last minute, when the LEH deadline is early summer

  • Working from the old 2024-2026 synopsis instead of the current one

  • Treating a drawn authorization as if it replaced the hunting licence and species licence

  • Forgetting that non-residents cannot enter the LEH draw

Quick FAQ

Can I hunt deer in BC without entering a draw?

In many cases, yes. Deer carry a general open season in a lot of management units, but some units use LEH, so check the current synopsis for the unit you plan to hunt.

Does winning an LEH draw replace my hunting licence?

No. The authorization is free if you draw it, but you still need your BC hunting licence and the species licence before you hunt.

How often do BC hunting rules change?

The main synopsis runs on a two-year cycle. The LEH synopsis is separate and runs annually.

Do I need a guide as a non-resident?

BC generally requires non-residents hunting big game to hunt with a licensed guide outfitter. Check the current synopsis for your species.
