Everything Between .25 and 10mm That Isn’t 9mm Luger — A Plain-English Map

The 9mm Luger is so dominant that the cartridges around it get read as footnotes. They aren't. This set spans a gas-seal revolver adopted in 1895, the pocket pistols John Browning designed for FN, two rounds engineered to beat a competition rulebook, and the 10mm Auto with five of the brands that load it.

Sorting them by the problem each one solved makes the shelf legible.

Service rounds from the other side of Europe

nagant revolver ammo armed the Russian Nagant M1895, a revolver whose cylinder moves forward to seal against the barrel — the only production revolver round built around that mechanism. Its successor, tokarev ammo, arrived with the Tokarev TT-30 in 1930: a bottlenecked round descended from the 7.63 Mauser but loaded hotter, and later the cartridge of the PPSh-41 submachine gun.

Browning's pocket pistols

.32 acp is the round that launched the FN–Browning partnership in 1899 and armed European police for a generation. 25acp ammo followed in 1905 for the smallest vest-pocket autoloader Browning ever designed.

Built to beat a rulebook

9 x 23 mm was Winchester's 1996 entry for practical-shooting competition: a long, strong 9mm case that makes major power factor at pressures a standard 9x19 case can't take. 45 super attacks the same goal from the .45 side — a .45 ACP-dimension round with a reinforced case and a higher pressure ceiling, from 1988.

The 10mm and the people who load it

10mm rounds began in 1983 with the Bren Ten and Jeff Cooper's ideas about what a service pistol should do, spent a brief moment as the FBI's cartridge, and then found its real audience with hunters and hard-use shooters. 10mm buffalo bore ammo is what a heavy-woods 10mm shooter means by full power: hard-cast, heavy-for-caliber hunting loads. bullet 10mm — a generic-sounding phrasing that in practice points at Federal's mainstream line — is the range-and-defense end of the same shelf, and 10mm fmj is Sig Sauer's entry, a phrasing that usually means its 180-grain range load.

What ties this list together

Every round here answers a question the 9mm Luger doesn't: a rulebook, a pocket, a surplus service pistol, or a bear. Knowing which question a cartridge was built for tells you where to look for it and what to expect when it arrives.

Availability, pricing and shipping requirements for any cartridge listed above can change and vary by state. Confirm current stock, your state's age and identification requirements, and any local shipping restrictions before placing an order.
