38 Special to 357 Magnum, 44 Special to 44 Magnum: The Two Ladders That Built Modern Revolvers

The two most important revolver cartridges of the twentieth century were both built the same way: take an existing Special, lengthen the case, and load it to a pressure the old guns could not take. Understanding that pattern explains most of what a revolver shooter needs to know about interchangeability.

Each ladder has two rungs that matter here.

The .38 ladder

.38 special ammo is the 1898 base rung. In 1935 Smith & Wesson and Winchester stretched its case by roughly an eighth of an inch and roughly doubled the pressure to make 357 mag ammo. The magnum will not chamber in a Special revolver; the Special fires fine from a magnum, which is why a .357 revolver is often bought as a .38 that can do more.

The .44 ladder

44 special for self defense is the 1907 base rung, itself a lengthened .44 Russian. .44 magnum ammo is Remington's 1955 stretching of it for the Smith & Wesson Model 29 — the same one-way relationship: Special into Magnum yes, Magnum into Special no.

Loads within a rung

A rung is not one load. Within .38 Special alone, federal 38 special is Federal's range and defensive line and 38 wadcutter ammo is the 148-grain target load that competition shooters have used for a century, and the two sit at different points of the same pressure envelope. The cartridge decides what fits; the load decides what it does.

Ladders that stopped at one rung

380 ammo never got a magnum; its pocket pistols could not have used one. 40 caliber ammunition is itself the short rung of the 10mm ladder rather than the base of its own. .38 super climbed by pressure rather than length, which is why it needs a +P mark instead of a longer case to stay out of the wrong gun. And 357 sig ammo for sale took a different route entirely — velocity from a bottleneck rather than from a longer case.

What to take from the ladders

Read the gun's stamp for the top rung it accepts. A revolver marked for the magnum takes the whole ladder below it; one marked for the Special takes only the Special.

Pressure ratings vary by firearm even within the same cartridge family; confirm your specific gun's chamber and rating before choosing a load, and verify current stock and any state shipping restrictions before ordering.
