U4gm POE2 How to Test Passive and Gear Damage Gains
Choosing a damage direction starts with your main skill, not the biggest percentage on an item. Before spending POE 2 Orbs on an upgrade, establish what the skill deals, which modifiers affect it, and whether those bonuses stay active during the fights you want to improve.
Read Beyond the Tags
Open the gem description and expanded skill details in your current client. Check tags, base damage, weapon requirements, and separate entries for secondary effects. Tags identify mechanics, but do not guarantee that every component benefits from the same modifier.
For weapon attacks, inspect the weapon's contribution. Distinguish flat added damage from increased and more modifiers. Increased bonuses generally add within their applicable pool; more modifiers multiply.
Spark Shows Why Conditions Matter
Use Spark as a practical check: confirm its Spell, Projectile, and Lightning tags in the current gem panel. Its listed lightning damage supplies the starting damage; a weapon's local physical damage does not become Spark's base damage.
A bonus against shocked enemies is conditional, not extra base lightning damage. Evaluate shock uptime before counting it as permanent. Shock application, shock effect, and damage against shocked enemies are different properties; read their current descriptions separately.
For example, a hypothetical 20% increased-damage bonus against shocked targets contributes nothing before shock applies. When active, it adds to other applicable increases rather than multiplying the entire result.
Trace Conversion and Check Supports
Where conversion appears, record the original damage, conversion percentage, and resulting types. In Path of Exile 2, type-specific modifiers follow the resulting damage type, not the original one. Evaluate unconverted damage separately, and verify ordering when multiple conversion effects interact.
Read each support's current restrictions and confirm compatibility in the skill menu. Shared tags are not sufficient. Check penalties, resource costs, and which skill component changes. Confirm ailment calculations separately rather than assuming hit modifiers also scale every ailment.
Test One Change at a Time
Save a baseline, then change one passive or item at a time. Compare detailed damage, cast or attack rate, resource sustain, and conditional uptime. A larger displayed hit can still produce worse sustained damage.
Repeat the same boss at the same difficulty, keeping supports and buffs unchanged. Time several attempts, noting movement and resource interruptions. Tooltip changes are useful evidence, but may omit conditional effects or secondary damage; consistent combat results matter more.
Keep enemy resistance, exposure, curses, and temporary buffs consistent. If a new item changes accuracy, critical chance, or skill levels, account for those changes instead of crediting its damage type alone.
Choose the damage direction that survives those checks. If you decide to buy POE 2 Orbs for upgrades, work from a tested stat priority rather than a large percentage that your main skill cannot use.
