• 🌙 THERE IS A NAME IN NSUKKA TOWN AND ITS SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES THAT CARRIES A PARTICULAR CULTURAL WEIGHT. IN NSUKKA, THEY CALL IT ORIOKPA. IN THE WIDER NSUKKA CULTURAL ZONE, IT IS KNOWN AS OMABE. IN EDE-NTA, IT IS THE LIVING FACE OF THE ANCESTRAL WORLD.

'When the Oriokpa Arrives in Ede-Nta, the Ancestors Come With It'

And when it arrives — when the drums begin their particular announcement and the community understands that what is coming is not ordinary — everything changes. 🥁
The Oriokpa/Omabe masquerade is not a performance that Ede-Nta and its Ede-Oballa community organises for entertainment. It is a sacred institution — one of the most spiritually charged and culturally significant masquerade traditions in all of southeastern Nigeria, documented in academic literature, celebrated in national cultural records, and lived, right now, in the compounds and village squares of this community on the Nsukka plateau.

    What the Oriokpa/Omabe embodies:
👁️ Ancestral spirits returning from Ụwa Mmụọ — the spirit world — to visit the living, bless them, correct them, and renew the covenant between the generations.
⚖️ Sacred enforcement of community moral order — what no police station, no court, and no government ordinance can fully replicate in its social authority.
🥁 Elaborate drumming traditions that carry specific meaning — rhythms that announce, warn, welcome, and mourn, each distinct to specific masquerade identities and occasions.
🍽️ Ritual food (ọkpa akụ ụlọ Ọmabe) prepared exclusively for the masquerades — a communal act of feeding the ancestral spirits that connects Ede-Nta's kitchen to its cosmos.
🌙 Night ceremonies — the most sacred and most spectacular — as the Oriokpa moves through the community in darkness, visiting compounds, speaking in the ancient voice of those who have crossed over.
And then there is Iwa Ji — the New Yam Festival. 🍠 The moment when the entire community — those in the compounds, those in Nsukka town, those in Lagos and London — exhales together in gratitude. The Onyishi offers the first yam to Ala and the ancestors. Palm wine is poured. The drums begin for a different reason now: joy.

George wrappers and isi-agu fabric catch the afternoon light. Coral beads at the throat. Head-ties tied with the artistry that women in Ede-Nta have been perfecting since before the dual carriageway was a plan on a government blueprint.
The Oriokpa was here before the secretariat annex was built. It will be here long after. And it is the most honest testimony Ede-Nta has about who it truly is.

  • 🌙 THERE ARE CERTAIN NIGHTS IN EHA-AZUABOR WHEN THE DRUMMING STARTS — AND EVERYTHING ELSE STOPS.

Not from fear. From reverence. Because everyone present understands, in a way that goes deeper than language, that what is happening is not ordinary.
    The Omabe has come.
In the Eha-Alumona corridor of Nsukka LGA — the cultural heartland to which Eha-Azuabor belongs — the Omabe masquerade is not a performance that communities stage. It is a sacred institution that arrives on its own terms, according to its own protocols, in its own season. 🥁
The Omabe are believed to embody the spirits of ancestors returning from Ụwa Mmụọ — the spirit world — to do what ancestors have always done: bless those who deserve it, correct those who need it, protect what must be protected, and remind the living that the chain of generations is unbroken and watching.

What the Omabe Festival involves in Eha-Azuabor and the wider corridor:
🥁 Elaborate drumming traditions — rhythms that carry meaning, not just sound, signalling the masquerades' approach to every compound across the community
🍽️ The sacred preparation of "ọkpa akụ ụlọ Ọmabe" — food prepared specifically for the masquerades in a ritual that connects the kitchen to the cosmos
🌙 Night ceremonies — the Omabe moving through the community in the darkness, visiting compounds, speaking in the voice of those who have crossed over
👁️ Strict protocol — women and children observe from designated positions, preserving the sacred mystery that gives the tradition its authority
🌿 Spiritual renewal — the community emerging from the festival cleansed, reordered, and reconnected to its deepest identity
And then, when the harvest season arrives, there is Iwa Ji — the New Yam Festival. The earth has given. The ancestors are honoured first. 🍠 The Onyishi breaks the first yam in ritual thanksgiving. And only then — only after the spiritual accounting is done — does the community lift its voice in the joyful, communal exhale of celebration.
Families in George wrappers and isi-agu fabric. Palm wine in gourds passed between hands. The ogene gong ringing across the highland. Songs older than the oldest person present.
This is Eha-Azuabor being exactly what its name promised: a gathering place.

Iwa JI — THE FEAST THAT BINDS EZEMA‑NE‑EDEM TO ITS ANCESTORS

"Before a single household dares eat the new yam, the ancestors must be honoured first."

The Onyishi lifts the first roasted yam. The Attamah — Ezema's chief priest — pours palm wine into the earth. The ogene bell rings once. And suddenly, the whole of Ezema-ne-Edem breathes as one.

This is Iri Ji. The New Yam Festival. The moment the farming season closes and a season of abundance — earned by sweat, faith, and ancestral blessing — is declared open.

Men appear in isiagu tops and red caps, coral beads resting on their chests like armour. Women move in layers of colour. The Mmanwu emerge from the sacred grove — voices from the other side, arriving to bless the living once more.

In Ezema-ne-Edem, the New Yam is not merely a meal. It is a covenant. A promise made by the living to the dead: "We remember you. We still know who we are." 🌿Show less

  • ỊWA JI — NEW YAM FESTIVAL
[The earth gives, and Okutu gives thanks — celebrating Iwa Ji, the new yam festival]

Every year, when the rains ease and the soil gives its best, Okutu's eight villages come together for Iwa Ji — the new yam festival. This is not simply a harvest celebration. It is a renewal: of the community's bond with the earth, with the ancestors who farmed this land before us, and with one another across all eight villages.

Before a single yam is eaten, the first tuber is offered to Ala — the earth goddess — and to the ancestors. Then the drumming begins. The ogene ensemble calls the villages together. Women dress in their finest George wrappers and coral beads. Men sit in age-grade lines, wrapped in ishi agu fabric, the lion-print cloth of Nsukka men. The masquerades move. The community counts itself whole.

For those in Enugu, Lagos, London, or Houston — Iwa Ji season is when Okutu calls its children home. The yam barn is full. The drums are ready. Come and be counted among your people.

Iwa Ji 2026 — dates to be announced
